Women & Girls Fund, Norwich Area Chapter

The new Norwich Chapter of the Women & Girls Fund held its first annual “friend-raiser”, a mini-golf tournament on June 2007 at Odetah Campground in Bozrah, attended by 86 local area women.

At the opening ceremony, two grants were presented to nonprofit organizations for local programs. The grant recipients were selected by the fund’s Donor Founders. The Fund will make annual grants for women and also build a permanently endowed fund to provide ongoing, long-range grants.

The initiative, facilitated by the Community Foundation of the Tri-County Area (created with the merger of the Eastern Connecticut Community Foundation and the Grant recipients; Kim Mrowka, Case Manager; Carol Croteau, FounderCommunity Foundation of Northeast Connecticut), responds to the health, nutrition, safety, shelter, educational and vocational needs of women and girls. The fund has both endowed and non-endowed components, to support women and girls, and their families annually, while also building a permanent resource for the future.

2007 Grant Recipients: $14,220 to 2 Organizations

Bethsaida Community, Inc.: $8,000
Bethsaida Community fosters personal growth and healing of women who are homeless or at risk, providing permanent housing with support for women with disabilities and limited income. This grant will seed a new counseling and support program for women leaving the Katie Blair House Transitional Living Program and transitioning to independent living, a time of renewed vulnerability.

Women’s Center of Southeastern Connecticut: $6,220
The Victim Advocate Law Enforcement (VALE) program serves victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in the Norwich area by placing a “Victim Advocate” in the Norwich Police Department to be available at the time of or shortly following assault incidents. The Domestic Violence Team, consisting of police and the victim advocate, makes home visits and follow up visits to insure that protective orders are being followed and victims’ needs are being met.

In addition to our Founders, who make gifts of $1,000 or more, the Women & Girls Fund is fortunate to have the ongoing support of many, many friends, whose dedication make this giving circle possible. We thank you for collectively helping to make life better for all women and girls in our community.
